Sculptra is a cosmetic filler that is injected into the face to restore facial volume lost due to aging or illness. It contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA). PLLA is a biocompatible synthetic substance that stimulates collagen production.

How is the procedure done?

During the procedure, your doctor will map the injection sites on your skin and clean the area. A topical anesthetic may be applied to help relieve pains and discomfort. Your doctor will then inject the Sculptra filler into your facial skin using multiple small injections.

The treatment takes about 30 minutes to be completed. You should be able to return to work or your normal daily activities after the treatment. 

After the treatment

You may experience some minor swelling, bruising or pains at the injection sites which will usually subside after a few days.

You will need to apply cold ice pack to the affected area for a few minutes at a time within the first 24 hours. You will also need to massage the area for five minutes at a time. You will need to do this five times a day, for five days. Also, you should avoid excessive sunlight or tanning beds until any redness and swelling have resolved.

Results from this treatment are gradual. It may take a few weeks to see the full effects of the treatment. Results last up to two years.

Risks or side effects

Severe risks or complications are minimal. Just like every injection treatment, you can expect some swelling and bruising at the injection site.

  • Tenderness
  • Pain
  • Bleeding
  • Itching
  • Bumps
  • Lumps under the skin
  • Skin discoloration.
