Testosterone is available in different forms and under the following brand names:

  • Testosterone Cypionate (Depo-Testosterone)
  • Testosterone enanthate (Delatestryl)
  • Testosterone undecanoate (Aveed)

Testosterone Cypionate (Depo-Testosterone)

Testosterone cypionate is an injectable solution with a brand name known as Depo-Testosterone. It is the most common testosterone injection given to males with low testosterone. Testosterone cypionate is given into the muscle. It is a prescription drug, and you’re allowed to self-inject this drug after your doctor must have shown you how to do so.

Testosterone cypionate is utilized to treat symptoms of low testosterone in males. Symptoms of low testosterone in males include erectile dysfunction, mood changes, poor concentration, low bone density, reduced muscle mass, low sex drive, hot flashes, reduced growth of penis and testicles, breast growth, loss of body hair, etc.

How Testosterone Cypionate Works

It belongs to a class of drugs called androgens, and it works by replacing the testosterone that your body is unfit to produce.

Testosterone Cypionate Side Effects

Common side effects

Common side effects may stop within a few days or weeks. Talk to your doctor if the side effects get worse and don’t go away.

Common side effects of testosterone cypionate include:

  • Acne
  • Pain
  • Swelling at the injection site

Interactions

Testosterone cypionate may interact with other medications, vitamins, supplements, or herbs that you may be taking. Interaction of testosterone cypionate with other medications can increase the risk of side effects or prevent it from working effectively.

Examples of drugs that testosterone cypionate can interact with include:

Insulin and oral diabetes drugs, such as:

  • Nateglinide
  • Pioglitazone
  • Repaglinide
  • Rosiglitazone
  • Metformin
  • Glimepiride
  • Glipizide
  • Sitagliptin
  • Saxagliptin
  • Linagliptin
  • Exenatide
  • Liraglutide

Taking these drugs together with testosterone cypionate may cause a significant decrease in your blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar levels will need to be closely monitored while taking any of these drugs together with testosterone cypionate.

Oral blood thinners, such as warfarin

Taking these drugs together with testosterone cypionate may increase your risk of bleeding. You must be closely monitored if you’re taking blood thinners with testosterone cypionate.

Corticosteroids and adrenocorticotropic hormone

Taking these drugs with testosterone cypionate can increase your risk of edema. You must be closely monitored for fluid build-up if you’re taking these drugs with testosterone cypionate.

Testosterone Cypionate Warnings

Certain people shouldn’t use testosterone cypionate to prevent side effects or complications.

Allergy warning

Testosterone can cause a severe allergic reaction. You shouldn’t retake testosterone cypionate if you’ve had an allergic reaction to it before. Complications and even death may occur if you take it again.

Symptoms of an allergy can include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Swelling of your throat or tongue

Call your doctor directly if you experience these symptoms after taking the drug.

Individuals with liver problems

Testosterone cypionate can cause liver damage. It could lead to serious liver disease. It can cause salt and water retention in people with liver problems. People with liver problems shouldn’t take this drug.

Individuals with kidney problems

Testosterone cypionate may cause salt and water retention in people with kidney problems or a history of kidney disease. Taking this drug can create your condition worse if you have kidney problems.

Individuals with prostate cancer

Testosterone cypionate may worsen prostate cancer. Don’t take this drug if you have prostate cancer.

Individuals with heart problems

Testosterone cypionate can cause salt and water retention in individuals with heart problems. If you have heart problems, taking this medication can worsen your condition.

Individuals with breast cancer

Testosterone cypionate can worsen breast cancer. Avoid taking this medication if you have breast cancer.

Individuals with sleep apnea

Testosterone cypionate may make sleep apnea get worse. It may make you wake up more often at night. Consult your doctor to know if this drug is good for you if you have sleep apnea.

Individuals with high cholesterol levels

Testosterone cypionate may increase cholesterol levels. High cholesterol levels may enlargement the risk of heart or blood vessel problems. If your cholesterol level is already at its peak, you may not be able to take this drug. Your physician should closely monitor your cholesterol levels while you take this drug.

Individuals with diabetes

Testosterone cypionate may cause a significant decrease in blood sugar levels. Your blood sugar levels need to be closely monitored while on this drug.

Individuals with blood clots

Testosterone cypionate may increase the risk of developing blood clots in the lungs or the deep veins of the legs. Individuals with a history of blood clots are more at risk of this condition.

Individuals with polycythemia

Testosterone cypionate may significantly increase red blood cell count. It could also worsen the condition of individuals with polycythemia.

Pregnant women

Testosterone cypionate is a category X pregnancy drug and should never be used when pregnant.

Seniors

Testosterone cypionate shouldn’t be used to treat age-related decreases in testosterone.

Individuals older than 65 may be at higher risk of heart disease, prostate cancer, and enlarged prostate while taking this drug.

Children

Testosterone cypionate hasn’t been confirmed safe and effective for use in children younger than 12 years.

This drug may affect bone maturation in children and can cause bones to mature more quickly than normal without a resulting increase in height. This can cause children to become shorter in height.

Your dosage & how often you should take the drug will depend on various factors such as:

  • Your age
  • The condition that is being treated
  • How severe your condition is
  • Medical conditions that you may have
  • How your body react to the first dose

Adult dosage (ages 18 years and older)

Typical starting dosage: Dosage will be decided based on your needs. Typically, 50–400 mg will be injected into your muscle every 2–4 weeks.

Dosage increases: Dosage will be adjusted based on your testosterone blood levels, response to the drug, and side effects that you may have experienced.

Maximum dosage: 400 mg will be injected into your muscle every two weeks.

Dosage for children (ages 12–17 years)

Typical starting dosage: A child’s dosage depends on age and diagnosis. Dosage will be decided based on the child’s needs. Typically, 50–400 mg will be injected into the child’s muscle every 2–4 weeks.

Dosage increases: Dosage will be adjusted based on testosterone blood levels of the child, response to the drug, and side effects that may have developed.

Maximum dosage: 400 mg will be injected into the child’s muscle every two weeks.

Dosage for children (ages 0–11 years)

Testosterone cypionate is not clinically confirmed safe and effective for use in children younger than 12 years. Hence, children younger than 12 years old shouldn’t use the drug.

Precautions and Directions

  • Testosterone cypionate is used for long-term treatment, and serious risks or complications can develop if not taken as prescribed.
  • This medication may not work well if you stop taking it without reason or your doctor’s direction.
  • You need to take testosterone cypionate as prescribed and in the required dosage for it to work well. Failure to do so may make the medication not work well, and you may still have symptoms of low testosterone.
  • Take this medication as scheduled and don’t miss doses. If you do otherwise, the medication may not work as well or may completely stop working. A certain amount of this medication must be in your body to work effectively.

If you miss a dose, don’t combine two doses at once to make up for the dose you missed. Combining two doses could lead to complications. Instead, inform your doctor.

Excess dosage

If you take this medication in excess, you could have dangerous levels in your body, which could be counterproductive. Side effects and complications may develop. Side effects or complications that may develop include:

  • Acne
  • Headaches
  • Mood swings
  • Pain and swelling at the injection site
  • Hair growth
  • Breast enlargement
  • Frequent erections
  • Erections that last longer than normal
  • Decrease in sperm count

Other forms of testosterone injection

For Adults (18 years and above)

Testosterone enanthate: A 50-400 mg dosage will be injected into a muscle every 2-4 weeks.

Testosterone undecanoate: A 750 mg initial dose will be injected into a muscle. The dosage of 750 mg will be repeated after four weeks.

For children (12 – 17 years)

Testosterone enanthate: A 50-400 mg dosage will be injected into a muscle every 2-4 weeks.

Testosterone undecanoate: A 750 mg initial dose will be injected into the child’s muscle. The dosage will be repeated after four weeks.
